What is an orofacial myofunctional disorder?

OMD’s are any habit or condition that interferes with proper development and action of the orofacial muscles. This includes muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks and jaw. Incorrect habits can lead to improper development of the teeth, speech, chewing, swallowing, poor table manners, and poor resting tongue posture. We take a multi-disciplinary team approach to correct such things improving your overall health!

Why is an OMD Program important?

Proper muscle function may assist the orthodontist in bringing teeth together in a more desirable relationship, this creating a prolong stability of occlusion. Early intervention may help with aiding in normal dental growth and development. May also improve adult related issues such as oral resting posture that may be attributing to disrupted sleep, TMJ pain and snoring.

How successful is the Program?

It has been shown that a program for orofacial myology dysfunction can be 80-90% effective in correcting swallowing and rest posture functions. Therapy can prove to be beneficial to children, teens and adults and corrections are usually maintained years after completing therapy.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders can be very obvious or happen over a period of time and be unclear. Certain habits or conditions can interfere with proper actions of orofacial muscles causing OMD. These muscles include cheeks, jaw, lips and tongue. When these muscles function incorrectly due to habits or conditions, it can lead to improper development. This atypical development causes the muscles to have incorrect adaptations and not work in balance which can cause a variety of problems.

This program has been a lifesaver! We did not know where else to turn… This week was the first time in years my daughter has played basketball with the neighbors. Before, she would just sit on the lawn and suck her thumb and watch… I’m convinced it was the 3rd party intervention. Thank you!”
Mrs. A, Lake Zurich

“If someone would have told me that Jacqueline would stop sucking her thumb on the very first night, I would have ‘NEVER!’ But she did, and has never agin put her thumb in her mouth. We owe mostly all our thanks to Misty Bridges, and a portion to Jacqueline for having the willpower that Misty helped enourage. Thank you again!”
