Introduction
What is Orofacial Myology Therapy?
Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is postural training of the tongue and facial muscles that includes therapy for orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and parafunctional or harmful habits. The prefix ‘myo’ means muscle.
Certified Orofacial Myologists provide information, education, resources, treatment, and support for families or patients seeking help regarding orofacial myofunctional disorders. They can improve a patient's speech, ability to eat and sleep well, and potentially save lives by detecting and treating more serious OMDs.
What is an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder?
Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are any habit or condition that interferes with the proper development and action of the orofacial muscles, including the cheeks, jaw, lips, and tongue. When the orofacial muscles function incorrectly due to habits or conditions, it can lead to improper development. This atypical development causes the muscles to have incorrect adaptations and not work in balance which can cause a variety of problems. Symptoms of OMDs can be very obvious or happen over a period of time and be unclear.
The most commonly seen OMDs in our practice are tethered oral tissues - more commonly known as tongue and lip ties.
